很多人都知道人类男性没有阴茎骨(penile spine)，但是大多数人不知道黑猩猩和其他哺乳动物都有。斯坦福的生物学家找到了一段哺乳动物共有，但是人类丢失的 DNA，可以解释人为何没有阴茎骨。他们的文章今天出现在 Nature 杂志上。

这段人类丢失 DNA 片段是一段调控元件，不编码蛋白，但离它最近的基因编码雄性激素受体。我们知道性激素与性征的发育有紧密的关系，其他研究也已经证实阴茎骨的生长依赖于雄性激素。于是这些斯坦福的科学家利用小鼠胚胎研究这段 DNA 在黑猩猩和小鼠的发育中起了什么作用，他们发现这些片段指挥基因在生殖结节(genital tubercle)和面部触须(facial vibrissae)表达。由此我们可以想像人类因为失去了这段调控元件，改变了对触须和阴茎骨的发育，最终导致我们没有感觉触须，也没有阴茎骨。

追根究底，原文作者猜测阴茎骨的丢失降低了性交过程中雄性的触觉敏感度，从而延长了性交时间，稳固了两性关系。其他的证据，比如人类男性犬齿的女性化，中等大小的睾丸（估计是跟其他灵长类比较），降低的精子活力，增大的雌性乳腺等都与一夫一妻，增强的两性关系和共同养育后代等行为有关。

这篇文章也提供了另一个例子，帮助解释人脑为什么特别大。所以，这将是人类进化方面最重要的文章之一。但是他们也还需要特供更多的证据来支持他们的发现。

补充：
遗传信息首先在DNA上以一维的线性形式排列在一起，其中一些片段负责编码蛋白质信息，通常我们把这些片段叫做基因。那些临近基因的片段虽然不编码蛋白质，但是他们很多控制着基因的表达，我们把他们叫做调控元件。调控元件控制基因在特定的时间和空间生产蛋白质，从而控制细胞的分化，组织的形成，最终导致物种的差异。
